With care your freesias will last up to 14 days.
Freesias are a beautiful, stylish and pleasingly fragrant flower that if properly taken care of can bring you much pleasure and joy.
Freesia can last up to 14 days in the vase. To achieve this here are some basic steps to follow:
Make sure the vase or display means you are using have been properly cleaned. Bacteria in the water will only speed up decay. Using bleach or chlorine is advised, even if some is left after you rinse that will help keep bacteria out of the water.
Use cut flower nutrients. This will help get all the buds along the comb to open up. Most flower foods like Chrysal, not only contain nutrients but also help keep a balanced proper Ph and promotes water uptake by the freesia. Sugar (or using some 7-up or like soft drink) will also help. Freesias need lots of energy to open!
Cut approximately 2-4cm off the bottom of the stem. Use a sharp clean knife; using scissors increases the chance of damaging the stem by flattening or puncturing which prevents the take up of precious food.
If possible store freesias in a cool, bright space, always away from direct sunlight. Less than 4 degrees will also substantially increase vase life. Cooler temperatures will help avoid bacteria growth.
Ways to show off freesias:collect various jars and vases, add some salal or other greenery and some twigs, and soon you will have a very stylish arrangement. Also placing freesias in unexpected places is a great way to refresh that space; like a bathroom or front foyer.
